He always does crap like this. Camera tricks are not magic. When you see him put it down off camera he isn't actually putting it down but passing it to the other guy off camera. The strips were always on the ground but the solid cube was covering them. While off camera his mate puts the bar there so that he can put his hand behind it so that you think there is still a solid shape.
